D-Day remembrance

June 6, 2009 - Jessica VanderKolk
German news sources today reported on the gathering of world leaders to commemorate the 65th anniversary of D-Day, in Normandy, France, which started the downfall of the Nazi regime and end of World War II.

According to a Deutsche Welle report, this is the first year German officials will hold a ceremony at a French military cemetery. Veterans from Germany, France, the U.S., Canada and the U.K. were scheduled to attend.

Did you do anything to commemorate today?

I watched the coverage of the ceremonies on C-SPAN. Later in the day, I watched TCM's broadcast of "Saving Private Ryan." Tom Hanks was in attendance at the ceremonies along with many veterans of the allied nations. There may even have been former members of the Luftwaffe or Wehrmacht in attendance. As a veteran, I harbor no animosity toward the Vietnamese people after all these years, so I would imagine a former panzer driver could honor his former enemy. War is strange. Peace is sometimes stranger.
