Obama's third visit

June 5, 2009 - Jessica VanderKolk
Deutsche Welle reports today on President Obama's third visit to Germany. Chancellor Angela Merkel met Obama this morning in Dresden, a city in the eastern part of Germany. They planned to tour the city today.

Later, the two leaders will visit Buchenwald, a former Nazi concentration camp. The camp is in the west, just a few hours from where AGP lives here. Obama and Merkel will meet Holocaust survivers.

Obama's visit will reportedly show the U.S. will not forget the Holocaust, after he criticized those who question it during a speech in Cairo.

What do you think of Obama's latest moves?

The President met with the Israeli Prime Minister only about two weeks ago. I would think that his diplomacy with the Muslim world was probably better served by not visiting Israel on this trip. I would think that Angela Merkel was a bit uncomfortable at Buchenwald. Since the President's great uncle was active in the liberation of the camp, he would naturally have significant interest to go there. Tomorrow he'll be in Normandy. I know from having visited Dunkerque that there is a special feeling there that almost haunts you. So far I think the President has done what probably no other President could do - both for relations with Islamic people and for the diversity of veterans who perished on the beaches, mostly in racially segregated units. He is a unique leader and individual.

Isn't it interesting that the President will talk about the Holocaust in Egypt and will meet with Holocaust survivors in Germany but he won't fly to Israel during this trip...He must be less than happy with Bibi
