Finals Game 1 Result

May 31, 2009 - Matt Leaper

Detroit Red Wings vs Pittsburgh Penguins

Red Wings lead series 1-0

This was a fun game to watch.  It was explosive in that building.  Both teams brought their A game and in the end it came to familiarity with the arena.  Detroit carried the faceoff percentage but that was the only area of dominence by either team.  Shots and Hits where both very balanced.  In the end the game came down to the bounces litterally.  Game 2 should be different now that Pittsburgh remebers how ridiculous the boards are.  In my opinion the league should step in and force Detroit to change the boards.  To my knowledge no other building has boards that act in that manner, it is an unfair advangtage as others teams are simply not use to it.  Its kind of like how sometimes the ice is bad in Pittsburgh and they seemed to be able to handle it better because again they are use to it.  This came up against Washington and at the next game there was league officials there to help setup and maintain the ice.  I'm going to stop on that note because its not that major of a deal but it did need mentioned.

I do have to say that I'm relatively happy with the officiating.  The main reason is simply because of the consistency.  The only inconsistent penalty called was the hooking by Adams.  On several occasions players commit that exact penalty and it went uncalled.  But the consensus was to let them played and it made for some exciting fast paced hockey.  Personally I would like the game called tighter but I will live with consistent calls.

Detroit needs to find a way to generate more scoring chances.  Their shot total was down and their much fewer scoring opportunities than they are use to.  If they can't generate more offense they will be in trouble into game two tonight.

Pittsburgh needs to convert.  Both Sid and Satan should of had goals but just simply didn't get the puck in the net.  The rest of their game is pretty solid.  They genrated more scoring chances and a decent number of shots.  Just stay the course and they should wear down the Wings.
