Totally "Lost": Deconstructing "The Incident"

May 13, 2009 - Ray Eckenrode
FLASHPOINT
Missions accomplished, but where do we begin in Season 6?
n

Deconstructing Season 5, Episodes 16 and 17, of the ABC television series “Lost” titled “The Incident, Parts I and II”:

The big picture
> Both Jack (with an assist from Juliet) and Locke (or someone or thing who’s taken the form of Locke) succeeded in their missions. Jughead’s plutonium core was detonated in the heart of the electromagnetic pocket at the Swan Station site and a bitter and jealous Benjamin Linus plunged a knife into Jacob’s heart. And we return to the question we asked last week: Did what “just” happened in 1977 ensure that what “just” happened in 2008 will never have a chance to happen?

Two players, one black, one white

> The sides in the upcoming or ongoing “war” on “Lost” are coming into focus. We have them personified with Jacob and Man #2 (magnificently cast with two fantastic character actors in Mark Pellegrino and Titus Welliver), mythical and mortal enemies, it seems. Jacob seems to represent free will and hope. He was wearing white when we first met him. Man #2, wearing dark, of course, seemed to be more pessimistic, remarking how “they” “always” seem to “fight, destroy and corrupt.” Imagery of God and Satan certainly comes to mind, but we’re guessing there’s more to it. Here's a key exchange between the two:
Man #2: It always ends the same
Jacob: It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is progress.

Not quite dead yet
> We were ready to declare Juliet’s death the most beautiful ever on “Lost,” surpassing even Charlie’s graceful demise, but it’s pretty clear to us that when Judghead detonated she was as alive as any other living person on the island.

Here’s Jacob
> When Kate and Tom were caught shoplifting the New Kids on the Block lunchbox they’d use for their time capsule in 1989 Jacob was there to pay for it.
> When James was ready to begin writing his letter to the con man Sawyer after his parents funerals in 1976 Jacob gave him the pen.
> Just before Nadia was killed by a hit-and-run driver, Jacob asked Sayid for directions, keeping him out of the vehicle’s path.
> When Ilana was recovering from some kind of facial injury (or surgery perhaps?) in a Russian hospital, Jacob visited and asked for her help.
> After Locke’s father threw him out the window, paralyzing him, Jacob touched his shoulder and told him everything would be alright.
> Jacob greeted Jin and Sun on their wedding day and told them (in perfect Korean) not to take their love for granted.
> Jacob gave Jack a “little push” after the surgery were Christian helped his son learn how to deal with fear in the operating room.
> Jacob met Hurley outside the prison and convinced him that he wasn’t cursed and that he should get on Ajira 316.
> Ben was tricked into killing Jacob in early 2008 by a being who took the form of John Locke.

Answers
> We think it’s still up for debate, but it looked to us like the statue was of the Egyptian god Sobek, part man, part crocodile.
> Sawyer really was going to drink his OJ and take his chances in the real world.
> Eloise is definitely pregnant.
> Ben had never met Jacob until 2008.
> Richard never ages because of Jacob.
> Rose and Bernard are living in 1977 as happy hermits, with Vincent, no less.
> Sawyer is officially an idiot (for looking at Kate instead of Juliet).
> Bram and Ilana are working for Jacob. They say they’re the good guys.
> Ben is a Pisces (unless he was lying).
> Jack, who was never so sure of anything in his life, needed the OK from Kate before he could drop the bomb down the well.
> Pierre Chang injured his left arm in “The Incident” when it was twisted in a heap of flying metal.
> Locke’s body is in the metal box.
> Jacob lies in the shadow of the statue, or as Richard said in Latin: He who will save us all.

Questions
> Who was the other man with Jacob?
> What is he still trying to prove Jacob wrong about?
> Why does he need to find a loophole to kill Jacob?
> Was that the Black Rock?
> Wait, is Ellie the leader of The Others and not Charles? Or are they co-leaders, like a king and queen?
> What was Ilana’s condition in the hospital?
> Why did they burn the cabin?
> Does Locke have a bad twin?
> Why do The Others speak Latin?
> Who’s coming?
> If it really is Man #2 taking the form of Locke, has he also been seen in the form of all the other dead people we've seen (Christian, Charlie, Anna Lucia, Alex)?

Easter Eggs
> The tapestry Jacob wove himself will yield a myriad of clues as it’s analyzed, we’re certain.
> As usual, Patsy Kline was playing when young Kate stole the lunchbox.
> Sun found Charlie’s Drive Shaft ring in Aaron’s crib.
> Jacob was reading "Everything That Rises Must Converge," a collection of short stories by Flannery O'Connor, while waiting for Locke to fall.
> Based on a clue Damon Lindelof laid out pre-finale, we think it's significant that Jacob touched every Lostie he came in contact with.

Quotable
>”I came to this island to change the world…” + Radzinsky
>”I’m carrying a nuclear b….” + Sayid
> “You’ve gone back in time 30 years and you’re still trying to shoot each other.” + Rose
> “So yeah, I lied, that’s what I do.” +Ben
> “If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.” +Sawyer
> “If I never meet you then I never have to lose you.” +Juliet
> “If we hit that pocket, all hell is going to break loose.” +Pierre Chang
> “Well, you found your loophole.” + Jacob

You missed my favorite part, the fade to WHITE with black LOST letterings at the very end. What's that mean? 2010 is so far away...

I really liked these episodes. The exchange between Jacob and Man#2 on the beach was great.

Very bummed though when you see 2010 for new episodes.
