Round 2 Game 6 Results

May 12, 2009 - Matt Leaper
Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins

Series Tied 3-3

Both teams started the game well but, it didn’t take long before Pittsburgh looked like they would win the series by a land slide.  One problem occurred they couldn’t beat Varlamov more than once.  In the second, Washington regained their composure and took a 2-1 lead.  Pittsburgh got a late power play and tied the game off of a Mark Eaton shot.  That setup an amazing third period.  All even both teams launched attack after attack.  Pittsburgh took a lead less than 5 minutes into the period but it didn’t take but a minute for Washington to tie it up.  Then just 40 seconds later they jumped ahead.  As the game went on it seemed that Washington was just going to protect that lead and it seemed like it might hold.  Then Sid just starts to take over the game, spinning all over the offensive zone and eventually tied the game with some great hand eye coordination.  Both teams had chances to get one more before overtime but no one could beat the goalies.  That is how it started in OT as well.  Then off a defensive zone faceoff, Talbots stick breaks and no one covers Steckel heading for the net as he deflects a shot from the point past Fleury.

This was an epic battle.  Neither team could get a clear edge.  The game was just back and forth, with amazing offensive and defensive talents at both ends.  No matter what happens on Wednesday this will most likely be a series to remember.

Washington needs to continue the strong play.  If Varlamov continues to make amazing saves they could advance to the next round.  They also need the supporting staff to show up as they did in game 6.  If Ovechkin and Backstrom are left to carry the load they will most likely lose as it seems Scuderi has figured how to shutdown Ovie.

Pittsburgh needs to shake off this game.  They again outshot and outchanced Washington but couldn’t get that two goal lead.  If MAF has a decent game and they play as they have, this should be their game to win.  MAF maybe the key, he let in a few somewhat soft goals in this last game but he usually bounces back with force.  They may also get a boast as it seems Gonchar may play.

Next Game Wednesday May 13 @ 7 on FSN/Versus
