Is the Mythic Map Pack that mythic?

April 10, 2009 - Nick Recchia Tom Worthington
For those of you who bought Halo Wars, the Mythic Map Pack is nothing new.  For the rest of us we had to wait until yesterday for Mythic to be released to the general public. Was it worth the wait? Should I have bought Halo Wars simply to have the Mythic Map Pack earlier than most?

To answer the second question....no, I shouldn't have bought Halo Wars just to have Mythic sooner. It would have been a nice perk but I don't feel that that purchase would have been justified. Now I'm not saying that Mythic is bad in any way. In fact I really enjoyed the new maps last night. I really only got to play on Orbital and Assembly for the most part. These two maps are pretty sweet. Here are my feelings on both:

Orbital: Makes me think about Midship from Halo2. I know it's not a remake but I feel that it is at least inspired by it. The big difference is that this map has a lot more room to run around. Its more circular as opposed to Midship that was more of a rectangle. Even when you were on the edge of the map you were still pretty visible. Orbital on the other hand has lots of different levels and pathways to take. So when you see a red dot on your radar you have alot of places to check for opponents. Overall I think this map is great for 4v4 battles. You may be able to do 6v6 but I think it will get crowded pretty easily. Which may be good if you want to do some crazy rocket matches.

Assembly: Assembly doesn't feel that big but with its long corridors you have alot more distance to run than you think. Why else would they put a few mongoose on the map? My one issue with the map is that even though the map feels simmetrical it really isn't. Almost to a point where I feel it is unfair to one team. For example, during a game of capture the flag, I headed down one of the lower corridors only to be rocketed from above moments later. It seemed a little to soon for a team to get to the rockets that are supposed to be in the center of the map. But to me, it feels like the red team had a slight advantage getting to the rockets sooner and being able to look down on the blue team and fire away. Maybe its just me but it seems like the Red team had a little less distance to travel to get to the power weapons than the blue team. Other than that I really like Assembly and I think it will make for some great games.

Now as for Sandbox, I didn't really have a chance to play on it seeing as it is geared towards Forge. When you enter the map it is just a huge wide open space where almost anything seems possible. I really can't wait to see what forgers come up with for this map. Not too mention that you can drop down into a grifball arena far, far below the actual map.

Just one more hint before I wrap this up. If you didn't know, there is a skull hidden on each map. It's an easy 75G to add to your gamerscore. The easiest way to get to the skulls is to go into Forge mode and get them that way. Especially on Assembly and Sandbox where it's a bit trickier to get to the skulls.
