Taxing situation

A former Blair County police chief recently got the boot from his borough council in Dauphin County.

Millersburg Chief Kurt Braun, who was Tyrone's chief about 30 years ago, lost his job, effective Dec. 31. Media reports indicate that Millersburg Borough Council terminated Braun for budget reasons, saying taxes would go up 50 percent otherwise.

Braun has been Millersburg's chief for six years.

It does seem strange that Braun loses his job while the department's three other officers keep theirs. One of those officers will be made corporal and be the de facto chief without the chief's title.

One report indicated that Braun was consulting an attorney.

This may get very interesting before it's all over, especially if a lawsuit -- age discrimination, perhaps -- is filed.
