The $150K makeover

October 23, 2008 - Ashley Gurbal

The Republican National Committee apparently spent $150,000 on clothes, makeup and hair appointments for vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. It probably could have been done for less, and it's definitely a PR nightmare for Josephine Six-pack.

It's an amount unfathomable to most of us "real Americans," who buy jeans at Old Navy and sweaters at Target. But most of us "real Americans" aren't jet-setting across multiple states making multiple public appearances in one day.

Which is why, in a way, it's money well spent, especially when you look at what Palin wore in the first days after her nomination -- those boxy jackets that did nothing for her. Her new look is much more classy, stylish and flattering to her figure, which is incredible when you consider she gave birth to her fifth child about six months ago. (Maybe moose hunting will become the new It workout.)

If you missed the premiere of "Stylista" on the CW last night, be sure to check it out next week at 9 p.m. Wednesday. It's a reality show that pits 11 fashion enthusiasts against each other as they compete for a one-year slot as an editor at Elle magazine. They have to impress real Elle staffers and one in particular -- Anne Slowey, Elle's fashion news director. Think "The Devil Wears Prada" becomes a competition.

Last night's premiere combined a little bit of fashion with a hilarious amount of drama. As a page designer, I particuarly enjoyed watching them struggle to create a Contributor's page, but no matter what you do, you'll get a kick out of the drama, the tears and the just plain odd ideas.

For the record: My money's on 22-year-old Ashlie, a fashion production assistant for Calvin Klein Dresses. She's the real deal.

Even McCain's own campaign is now calling Sarah Palin a "diva". Sorry, I don't think it is sexist. Remember what the media did with John Edwards' $400 haircut?

People PLEASE! This is SO sexist it isn't even funny!! I can GUARANTEE between Obama and Biden and their wives their attire is probably TRIPLED that! I am so sick of the media favoring Democrats more than Republicans in an "unfair" coverage. If the media would FOR ONCE stay unbiased, we would hear the REAL story of both candidates. Unbelievable!

Does the $22,500 for two weeks of a makeup artist bother anyone?

Not a Palin fan by any stretch, but this doesn't bother me at all. It's a bit hypocritical given her down-home facade, but the image of the possible VP of the US warrants an above average wardrobe (I'd also say above average intellect, which is why I'm no Palin fan.) I'll go a step further and say knowing the prices of designer clothes, I think that amount is rather modest.

Nice way to say you are a "real" person. Go out and spend $150,00 on clothes. Not only is it horribly hypocritical but its really stupid politically.

Michelle Obama has looked great in her clothes, very classy but the campaign has been careful not to go overboard. Most of Michelle’s outfits coming in around $100.

For someone who is supposedly representing the middle class, I think it is an outrage that they spent $150,000 outfitting Sarah Palin. Let's face it there is a world of choices between spending $5000 on one suit (which she did) and getting one at Wal Mart. Let's think about this, she spent $150,000 to dress up and call Barrack Obama an elitist. What is wrong with this picture?
