| | Prayers for policeSeptember 8, 2008 - Mark LeberfingerPolice officers have a very dangerous job. They leave home for work each day not knowing what the shift will bring. Family members have the same worry. All you have to do is look at the Blair County Law Enforcement Memorial at the Blair County Courthouse to count the cost. But that's only one part of it. Stresses include balancing work and family, dealing daily with some very, very bad people, handling a mountain of paperwork -- documents which can make or break and arrest -- , living in a fishbowl for all to see and having the responsibility of upholding the law for all. They can use the public's support. Area police and firefighters will be honored and prayed for Saturday at a special Blue Mass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona. Bishop Joseph V. Adamec of the Altoona-Johnstown Roman Catholic Diocese will be the celebrant for the 5 p.m. Mass. The Blue Mass is an northeastern U.S. tradition, dating to 1934. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the Masses have taken on a special meaning and spread across the country. Article Comments(4)karrikimNov-04-08 1:00 AM I am seeing how to put these words. Give us cool heads, stout hearts, and uncanny flair for investigation and wise judgement. Lord I ask for courage. These are the prayers. Law enforcement agencies globally are struggling to keep up with increasingly sophisticated criminals in the battle against crime. The problems are much big than many people will realise. --------------------- Karri Drug Rehabs Flower616Oct-25-08 12:19 AM I Think this is a very nice way to say to our and all Police Officers for their Services and for being willing to put their life on the line to protect all of us. Stop and think you may not like police and may have had a bad experience with a certain officer.. HOW WOULD IT BE WITH NO POLICE ON OUR STREETS TO PROTECT US FROM OURSELVES. We the people are our own worst enamy. Mike . Tink924Oct-21-08 7:24 PM You are so wrong Stormin...cops are a welcomed presence...they may not be welcomed to those who are doing wrong but they sure are welcomed by the rest of us. And no...nobody forced them into these dangerous jobs..they took the job to serve and protect...you try doing that in today's world where in return they get no respect whatsoever for risking their lives to protect people like you. StorminOct-06-08 3:37 AM Look, no forced these people into a dangerous job. They volunteered, knowing the danger's and pit falls of the job. The government took our very basic, and natural human right to defend our life and property. Other wise there would be very little need for cops. Back in the day, when America was a good moral standard, citizens were the law. The police. Literally. Imagine a bad guy trying to rob someone on a street, subway, or in a home, knowing that all around him/her is some seriously armed people, who will not hesitate to stomp him/her into the carpet, or use deadly force if the robbery attempt is tried. It won't happen. Anyway, cops are not a welcome presence these days. Post a Comment | |
